The core use of zirconium bricks (zirconium-containing refractories) in the metallurgical industry is to protect critical equipment and ensure smooth production by utilizing their high-temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and excellent thermal shock resistance. They are not only an indispensable “armor” in steel smelting but also play an important role in non-ferrous metal smelting.
Steel production is the primary application area for zirconium bricks, and their key roles are reflected in the following stages:
Ladle and Continuous Casting System: This is the most demanding area subjected to high-temperature molten steel and highly corrosive slag.
Ladle Slag Line: Traditional materials experience extremely rapid wear here, while zircon bricks or zirconium oxide-graphite (ZrO₂-C) bricks effectively resist the chemical erosion and physical scouring of the slag, significantly extending the ladle’s lifespan.
Zirconium bricks are commonly used in the three key components of continuous casting: in critical parts such as the slide gate and nozzle that control the flow rate of molten steel, zirconium mullite or zirconium corundum is often introduced to improve the material’s resistance to thermal shock, erosion, and molten steel corrosion, preventing cracking and steel leakage.
Instrument linings: For special processes such as vacuum degassing, zirconium bricks are widely used for lining due to their stable performance under reduced pressure.
Zirconium bricks also perform exceptionally well in smelting metals such as aluminum and copper:
Aluminum smelting furnaces: Zirconium bricks effectively resist the penetration and corrosion of metallic aluminum, alumina, and their molten slag, making them an ideal choice for parts such as the furnace bottom.
High-temperature electric furnaces: Zirconium bricks are often used as linings for equipment such as high-temperature induction furnaces. High-purity zirconium oxide products can even be used for smelting precious and rare metals.
Zirconium bricks are able to fulfill these roles thanks to the unique properties of their material: particularly the phase transformation toughening mechanism of zirconium oxide (ZrO₂), which prevents crack propagation within the material, ensuring its durability even under drastic temperature fluctuations.
