High Alumina refractory castables are mixed by high quality bauxite, mullite, andalusite or corundum as aggregate, silica Powder, α-alumina powder as micro powder, refractory cement as binder, also some additive to make better performance. Formulas are changed according to different applications.

Comparing to conventional dense castables, high alumina fire castables can be used in the area that have more higher temperature and also have higher cold crushing strength.

Description of High Alumina Castable

High-alumina refractory castable is a type of monolithic refractory material made primarily from high-alumina bauxite, mixed with water, and then poured into the container. Its core component is alumina (Al₂O₃), typically ranging from 40% to 90%. The higher the alumina content, the stronger the material’s high-temperature resistance and corrosion resistance.

Material Composition and Key Performance Characteristics

The performance of high-alumina castables depends not only on the alumina content but also on the precise formulation of its components:

The main raw material is high-alumina bauxite, with pure calcium aluminate cement added as a binder to achieve early strength. To optimize performance, active SiO₂ and α-Al₂O₃ micropowders are often introduced to improve flowability and sintering properties. Sometimes, minerals such as kyanite are added to compensate for volume shrinkage at high temperatures, ensuring structural stability.

Based on typical product data, the bulk density of this material is usually above 2.6-2.7 g/cm³, indicating a dense structure; its compressive strength at room temperature can reach over 80-100 MPa, exhibiting high mechanical strength. For example, a castable model LC-160 (Al₂O₃ ≥ 75%) can even achieve a compressive strength exceeding 150 MPa after high-temperature treatment at 1500℃.

Its permanent linear shrinkage rate at high temperatures is typically controlled within ±0.5%, indicating excellent volume stability and resistance to cracking due to shrinkage or expansion. Furthermore, it possesses good thermal shock resistance, abrasion resistance, and corrosion resistance.

Application of High Alumina Castable

High-alumina castables have a wide range of applications, commonly found in key parts of various high-temperature industrial kilns:

  • Iron and Steel Metallurgy: Used as linings for blast furnaces, hot blast stoves, heating furnaces, ladles, and tundishes.
  • Building Materials Industry: Commonly used lining materials for the precalciner, front and rear kiln openings, and grate coolers in cement rotary kilns.
  • Other High-Temperature Equipment: Also widely used in ceramic kilns, boilers, and waste incinerators.
