How silicon bricks are used in glass furnace

Silicon bricks, as acidic refractory materials with a SiO₂ content ≥94%, are a core material in critical parts of glass furnaces due to their high-temperature resistance, high-temperature volume stability, and non-contamination of molten glass. They are mainly used in high-temperature areas that do not directly contact the molten glass, suitable for the working environment of glass furnaces at around 1600℃.

The core applications of silicon bricks are concentrated in the high-temperature load-bearing and heated areas of glass furnaces.

Firstly, high-purity silicon bricks (SiO₂ content 96%-98%) are used for the furnace roof (main arch), breast walls, and front and rear end walls of the melting and working sections. Utilizing their high load softening temperature (1640~1700℃) and low creep rate, they withstand high temperatures and furnace loads, preventing deformation and collapse.

Secondly, they are used in the top of the regenerator and upper partition walls, suitable for medium- and high-temperature environments, ensuring efficient heat recovery.

Strict adherence to specifications is required during use: silicon bricks must be preheated before installation to avoid cracking caused by sudden heating and cooling. The gaps in the refractory brickwork must be kept uniform and filled with specialized refractory mortar to enhance sealing. During use, temperature fluctuations within the kiln must be controlled to avoid prolonged overheating and prevent abnormal crystal transformation of the silicon bricks.

Silicon bricks, due to their similar composition to molten glass, experience only slight erosion after exposure to alkaline vapors, without contaminating glass products. Their lightweight nature also reduces the weight of the furnace. Proper use can extend the service life of glass kilns and reduce energy consumption, making them the preferred refractory material for large-scale equipment such as float glass kilns, suitable for the high temperatures and corrosion resistance requirements of glass melting.
